“You are not disabled by the disabilities you have, you are able by the abilities you have.” – Oscar PistoriusI’m not sure if you’ve heard his story, but I wanted to share it with you… Oscar Pistoriusis an athlete competing for a spot on the 2012 South African Olympic Team. He is a sprinter and he is also a double amputee. Oscar was born without both of his fibulas and had his lower legs amputated when he was a baby. (sound familiar?) Oscar is what unLIMBited is all about. He is the perfect example of mind over matter – of overcoming obstacles to accomplish a goal.
In addition to the challenges Oscar faced with his prosthesis (he wears carbon fiber prosthetic running blades, or “cheetah legs”), he has had to petition the Court of Arbitration for Sport to allow him to compete against able-bodied athletes. There is a belief that Oscar’s prosthetic limbs gave him an unfair advantage over the able-bodied competitors. Let that sink in for a moment – a double amputee had an unfair advantage in running against athletes with 2 legs. You can read more about the case and the claims here.
I wanted to introduce you to Oscar because I believe he, along with so many others, embodies what unLIMBited is all about and I thought that he could use a few more positive vibes as he continues on his quest to make the South African Olympic team. I, for one, am rooting for him. Go get ’em Blade Runner!
